Today I have an extraordinary treat for you again!
The lovely Anne Michaud is very busy on the blog tour trail at the moment for her new book Girls & Monsters and she’s graciously agreed to stop here too. I met Anne when I joined The City of Hell Chronicles, vol I team and her bug-filled story about an infested London pulls your heartstrings. You should check it out.
Today, however, she’s giving us some different monsters. Here’s what Anne had to say about her inspiration for the new book;
Through the years, I had collected a bunch of short stories that were supposed to be published in anthologies that never seen the day and others that had been rejected on claims they didn’t feel finished. Instead of working on them in their original shorter forms, I decided to regroup them into one collection and lengthen them to novellas, exploring each character and their monsters to another level. As I was working on those five stories, I quickly realized the two main themes were girls and monsters, so I happily had found my title, too.
With a strong love for the dark and its habitants, I wanted the monsters to feel real and have great differences from one another, for them to be multidimensional as much as my main characters. The inspiration for my monsters came way ahead of the one for my girls, and I really wanted the monsters to be as important as the main characters, so I worked on them most of all. So obviously, the monsters dictated how I developed my characters, my plots and my worlds – everything was according to them, who they were and what they wanted, which means the title should have been Monsters & Girls, really.
Some elements of my stories were taken out of my life, like the youth hostel in London where I stayed for a week when I first lived there. No, there wasn’t any black dog following me, but the park across the street and the Churchill statue were there. Then, I dug into my journals to remember dreams I’ve had – I should say nightmares – and inspired my monsters from there as well. Limnade’s first scene with Liz, the one in the bathroom, is the exact nightmare I had four or five years ago: the dread, the drain, the fright – it was all there. Just like the first scene of We Left at Night, where I was doing my homework while the line of the forest became alive with zombies… another time I woke up with my heart racing and my breath short. The fear of losing my pets drove me to write A Blue Story; my favorite’s band wonderful video (Lullaby, The Cure), triggered me to write Dust Bunnies. Inspiration comes from everywhere, and that’s what’s so amazing about The Muse: it can be anything that sparks the idea that will stick and become people and events.
Girls & Monsters is an homage to my love of the darkness and what creeps at night, about strong girls not backing out from a fight and especially not needing the help of anyone to win against the baddies. But most of all, this collection of novellas is really about my love of dark horror.
Of course I had to ask Anne; a girl and her friend walk into a bar. The bar of full of monsters. What happens?
One of the girls flee and the other kicks the monster’s butt. What else?
You can enter various contests to win a copy of this marvelous collection. See Anne’s bio below for details. But I wouldn’t be me if I din’t add another contest on top. So… to win an e-book copy of The City of Hell Chronicles, vol I, tell me in the comments what you think happens in the bar. Contest is open for one week, until the end of Sunday April 28th, 11.59 pm GMT.

She who likes dark things never grew up. She never stopped listening to gothic, industrial and alternative bands like when she was fifteen. She always loved to read horror and dystopia and fantasy, where doom and gloom drip from the pages.
She, who was supposed to make films, decided to write short stories, novelettes and novels instead. She, who’s had her films listed on festival programs, has been printed in a dozen anthologies and magazines since.
She who likes dark things prefers night to day, rain to sun, and reading to anything else.
